Celebrating Stuff

I’ve always thought that my understanding and knowledge of what days are important and what is celebration worthy is rather provincial. Also, our culture doesn’t have nearly enough things to celebrate, and I like celebrations.

So, I crawled Wikipedia using a little Python script. There’s an article on every date, which is pretty awesome, and each one has a “Holidays and Observances” section.

I ran another little Python script over it to remove all of the “Christian Feast Days” (these guys have about 5 a day — talk about greedy), and dumped the results into a JSON file.

Then I wrote a little page that tells you what to celebrate. It lives at WhatShouldICelebrateToday.com. Now whenever you’re in the mood, you’ll always have an excuse to celebrate.
